YouTube uploads: One hour of video every second

Every second, one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube. That’s an amazing amount of video. When I go back in time, I can remember writing some blogposts about these YouTube facts & figures, it goes on and on and on and on. In January 2008, every minute there was 10 hours of video uploaded on YouTube. In Oktober of that same year, the amount of uploaded hours was already 15 per minute. In May 2009, there were 20 hours of video uploaded to YouTube per minute, in March 2010 it was already 24 hours. In november 2010 it was 35 hours per minute, and in May 2011 it was 48 hours. And now, in January 2012, YouTube uploads hit 60 hours per minute. Check out the video below:

It has all the elements of an orchestrated, buzz provoking conversation starting marketing machine in the making: Pottermore. It might not have come to your attention (you have no kids, don’t read books, hate little boys with glasses, don’t like witchcraft or wizards) but Harry Potter is just… BIG. And in euro’s and dollars, he will be bigger, even after the box office of his last movie stopped breaking record after record. J.K. Rowling herself kicked off the buzz about Pottermore in june already and now fans are hungry waiting in line to get access, while they’re being activated via social channels.

The Long Tail of the Greenpeace Nestlé Orang-Utan video

Everybody probably knows or at least heard about the Greenpeace anti-KitKat Nestle campaign, started in march 2010 (see this analysis by Jeremiah Owyang, or watch this Prezi). The video, quite bloody and blunt, in which we see an office-guy eating a KitKat-Orang-Utan finger (Greenpeace wanted Nestle to stop the use of palm oil from companies that are trashing Indonesian rainforests, pushing orang-utans towards extinction). Nestlé immediately demanded that the video be removed from YouTube citing copyright infringement. YouTube agreed and removed the video — thereby creating a stir that got traditional media outlets interested in the story.

This Friday the world has one of the biggest events of the year planned. If you haven’t heard what I’m talking about, you must have been on a different planet. The #royalwedding hashtag is already booming for days on Twitter. Newspapers are reporting on a daily basis about the first big wedding of the century.

As marketers and managers, there is a lot we can learn from this event to implement in our own marketing.
